My coaching philosophy and approach to professional and personal development are based on the following assumptions:

    • Professional and personal leadership occurs where the heart and head — feeling and thought — meet.

    • The ways in which you act — not just what you do, but how you do it — is a fundamental key to professional and personal effectiveness.

    • You are what you repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit (conversely, ineffectiveness, therefore, is not an act but a habit — or a series of habits).

    • In the end you write your own scripts — you are in control of, and responsible for, your successes or failures.

    My coaching initiatives have one simple, overarching goal: to help people achieve beyond what they have ever previously achieved.

    My coaching approach is based on multi source feedback, self-examination, reflection and more feedback.  Every coaching engagement includes the following activities:

    • A customized 360º assessment is done to determine individual strengths and developmental needs.  

    • Based on the 360º feedback, a focused development plan  incorporating day-to-day and week-to-week experiences as the foundations for learning is created

    • Regular coaching sessions are conducted (weekly or bi-weekly) using the following process.

      • Events of the previous week are discussed and analyzed; insights regarding what worked or didn’t work in a given situation are uncovered and suggestions for behavioural maintenance or change made. 
      • Participants’ are given "homework" assignments between coaching sessions — recommended readings, instruction regarding practice of and reflection upon specific behaviors — and they are asked to record activities and outcomes in a log book. The process is incremental in nature — each session builds on the previous one.

    • Progress is assessed using ongoing feedback from those with whom the client interacts and re-administration, in whole or in part, of the 360º assessment.

    I work with organizations across the economic spectrum but most often in O & G and Finance. While I work with people from the rig floor to the executive suite, most my coaching clients are in the “emerging or struggling leaders” group. I’ve worked in Canada, the US, UK, and the Middle East.

    Why me?  I’m a pragmatist and a realistic optimist with more than 30 years of experience helping organizations and the people who work in them get better. I’ve seen a lot, heard a lot and done a lot and, as a result, have developed a type of wisdom that comes only with experience.  Nothing comes out of a generic “can” — every experience is customized to the needs of the individuals and groups I work with. Referrals and repeats account for roughly ninety five percent of my business so I must be doing something right!

    Other stuff.  I’m a PhD in Organizational Behaviour, married to my first wife, author of Don’t Die With Your Helmet On: The Power of Personal Responsibility and, recently, head coach of the Crowchild Midget Two Blackhawks. What hair I have left is grey.
